Are there any type of wood/laminate floors that are dog proof?
I desperately need new flooring, but I hesitate to buy anything because of my dogs. I'm afraid their nails will damage whatever I put down. I plan on selling in less than 2 years, but my carpet is nasty and I want wood.
I have a yellow lab puppy, we are expecting him to be a BIG boy (85+ pounds). Any advice will be appreciated.
Laminate or wood floors will both work for your application. There is a difference between the two however. First off, any floor that is used will eventually show use and wear. Some floors are easier to repair though. Any sales person suggesting that a floor will not scratch, dent or damage is not being honest with you. That being said some floors are much harder to damage than others. Lets look at both hardwood and laminate floors and compare them for your use (active household with dogs).
When compared to wood floors laminate floors are more resistant to impact damage which would cause indenting. Most laminate and wood floors now use the same topical finish coat, aluminum oxide. This coat provides the scratch resistant surface. So both wood and laminate floors are similar in scratch resistance.
Wood floors have an advantage as they are easier to repair. Wood floors require a fresh up coat over the damaged area if they are scratched. Your dog will not pose a problem for a wood floor with a good aluminum oxide finish. If the wear and tear becomes evident over time (certainly wont in 2 years) simply refresh the surface. Wood floors last decades, and in some cases can have and do last centuries. Some of the nations oldest homes still have the original wood floors.
Something else you might consider is re-sale value. Laminate floors do very little to improve your homes re-sale, while nothing improves the re-sale quite like real wood floors.
Handscraped wood floors are among the best options for active families too. You do not have to pay 18.00 square foot if you buy them online. As they age, the wear and tear adds to the patina. Handscraped floors are widely desired in homes with higher price points and improve the re-sale value of any home.
(If you do go with wood, be sure to get one with an aluminum oxide finish. )
