I am low on funds and wish to insulate attic using old blankets or other thick fabric - not a fire hazard?
I know that using newspapers creates a fire hazard, but what about old blanket...

I am low on funds and wish to insulate attic using old blankets or other thick fabric - not a fire hazard?
I know that using newspapers creates a fire hazard, but what about old blankets? Is fiberglass the preferred choice mainly because it is not a hazard? (my husband would use it and install it himself but he has an aversion to fibers and we don't have the extra money to pay someone)
Don't do blankets, for all the reasons mentioned, but also because they really don't make very good insulation. Also DO NOT use scavanged styrofoam because it is a fire & smoke hazard in this application.
About the cheapest and most effective insulation you can get is fiberglass batts, and if you install it yourself (or have friends help) you cut the costs even more. Here's a quick video clip showing how to do it:
